OPEN SKATE RESPONSIBILITY CODE

During an open skate, ice skating is for the enjoyment of everyone, regardless of your skill level. There are elements of risk in ice skating. Therefore, we ask that you use common sense, show courtesy to others and anticipate dangerous situations before they arise. The following guidelines are some basic elements of common sense and courtesy:

-          Skate in control and be able to stop or avoid other skaters.
-          While on the ice, keep moving. Stopping abruptly may cause an accident or obstruction for other skaters.
-          Skaters ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid hitting them or disrupting them.
-          No speeding, playing “tag”, weaving or roughness
-          No snowball throwing or throwing of ice
-          Keep rink exits clear at all times.
-          Before getting on the ice, look for oncoming skaters.
-          Do not sit on the dasher boards.
-          Do not carry children or other items while skating.
-          No eating, drinking or smoking on the ice.
-          Rink equipment can be dangerous. Stay off the ice when resurfacing is in progress.
-          Skates must be worn at all times during an open skate. Under no circumstances will sneakers, bare feet or any other shoes be allowed.
-          No hockey sticks or pucks are allowed on open skating ice
-          No chairs, skating bars or any other foreign objects allowed on the ice
-          Obey the monitors and report hazardous conditions to the monitors.
-          Respect the ice. Please do not litter or use foul language.
-          No jumps, spins or other potentially dangerous figure skating maneuvers will be allowed.

This is a partial list. Please remember that there are elements of risk that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. You are ultimately responsible for your own safety. Use caution, skate in control and respect other skaters on the ice. The rink’s monitors cannot guarantee your safety and will not protect you from injury.

If a skater fails to use good judgment, skates irresponsibly or cannot follow the Responsibility Code, he/she may lose skating privileges at the Sports Centre. Rink personnel, including rink monitors, reserve the right to take away individual privileges if it is in the best interest of the safety of all skaters.
